I'm listening to a concert bootleg of Jack White and the boys (the boys being Brendan Benson and Ben Blackwell) playing The Union Forever at the gold dollar prior to the formation of The White Stripes.

It's astounding how fully formed these tracks are.

I can't really imagine being present for something like that.

Don't get me wrong, I've been to a ton of independent shows, and I've seen bands at every stage of development, and some of them were truly remarkable, but I never heard a local band play 45 minutes of original absolute bangers.

They open with Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground.

In 1999.
