What Everyone Seems To Get Wrong About Mastodon (or what What Mastodon’t)
Posted: November 12, 2022
Let’s get this out of the way up front. Twitter is a massive corporation that recently sold for tens of billions of dollars. Mastodon (or, really, the Fediverse) is an adhoc collection of dozens of servers run on spare change and passion by hobbyists the world over.

@ajroach42 That is an excellent and helpful read, thankyou. As a new user it is well worthy of my first retweet...er...sorry...boost!
@ajroach42 thank you for this post it’s so educational for newcomers like me. I also read the post you linked to and it confirmed my intuition that the arrival of many new people with a different sense of how social media works can be challenging for existing users. Thank you for continuing to support and guide us as we try and learn new ways of doing things.
@ajroach42 It's great, except I liked Twitter's "quote tweet" and photos with story links that make it more visually attractive and of interest to the reader.
@ajroach42 Thank you. I read that, and the Home Invasion post you linked. More people should read it. I think you might like to listen to https://textfiles.libsyn.com/jason-scott-talks-his-way-out-of-it-episode-206
A social network for the 19A0s.
If you come to Mastodon expecting Twitter, you won’t only be disappointed, you’ll probably be angry. The fediverse is a great platform, it’s where I spend most of my social time, and it has an awesome community. It’s also a wierd niche project run by weird nerds, queer people, furries, neurodivergent people, tech people, anarchists, and radicals (I’ll leave it up to you to figure out which of those apply to me.)
We built this thing, some of us over the last 10 years. We built it to provide a place to do Social Media that wasn’t owned and controlled by some behemoth that could be sold to Elon Musk.
Guess what? It was a good idea.
