Andrew Roach @ajroach42

Please recommend to me more people to follow who talk about music and old technology and vintage scifi and maybe text adventure games?

It's hard to find new people on a small instance, so boosts and replies are welcome and encouraged.

@ajroach42

The only one thing you needs to know about text adenture games is that you are likely to be eaten by a grue.

@ajroach42

wellllll

@squirrel does older hardwarestuff @ifixcoinops fixes coin-ops
@beadsland is retro in a way I can't really describe but it works for them, apparently

I'm still kind of getting mentally together so this is my whole list ATM

@sydneyfalk @squirrel @ifixcoinops @beadsland

I was already following Maple and Dan, reaching out to @beadsland now.

@sydneyfalk @ajroach42 @squirrel @ifixcoinops

Thank you. "retro in a way I can't really describe" is high praise, on my clay tablet, anyway.

@beadsland @djsundog Sundog was one of my first follows, back before there was even a toot-lab.

@ajroach42 Uh, I occasionally talk about music and old tech, but also a lot of other stuff, so...

@ajroach42

@qrs has his beaglebone-inside-retro-terminal project

@PixelOccult made some retro-scifi tarot deck

@phryk sometimes makes some music with synthesizers

@phryk @PixelOccult @ajroach42

@qrs @phryk @PixelOccult @Wolf480pl That's really cool, and I'd love to know more about it eventually.

@Wolf480pl @ajroach42 @PixelOccult

I don't tho. I'm trying to get into music production with only FLOSS software but haven't even started composing a single track – mostly just trying to get a feel for how to manipulate sounds with the tools I have access to (and sometimes try to get new tools to compile on my FreeBSD). :P

@phryk that’s a journey I’m interested in following!

@ajroach42 mastodon.social/@phryk/9968793 Literally just 5 days ago that I was able to produce a sound I liked for the first time. :P

@phryk @ajroach42 least you have idea of what to do with these tools. When I tried playing around with LMMS, I was like... ok, I have all these knobs and know what they do, but... what do I do with them? I don't know what sound I want to make...

@Wolf480pl @ajroach42

I know a bunch of sounds I want to make, but have am still mostly failing at producing those. :P

I can heartily recommend Ardour and especially the calf plugin suite which comes with fancy custom UIs for all its parts (synths, filters, compressors, most of what you need, really) – and having tried to get into FOSS audio production a few times over the years I know that it used to be extremely painful.

@ajroach42 I'm obsessed with retro keyboards. Hammond B3, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Vox Continental etc. I'm not a prolific tooter, run a small instance for the heck of it, but if you ever have a hankering to discuss vintage keyboards, I'm your man / person.

@cheesegrits I followed you in the past. I must have lost your account when I did my last server jump.

I don't know anything about vintage keyboards, but I love to talk about synthesized music.

@ajroach42 it doesn't get much more "old technology and music" than a Hammond B3. :)

Google "Hammond tone generator" for some retro tech.

@cheesegrits I definitely haven’t spent enough time with hammonds or with music creation tech in general.

Like, I can pick one out when I’m listening to the MGs, but that’s about it.

I’ll take a look in more depth soon, though.

The other day, I did read about something called a ‘novachord’ I think? Polyphonic synth from the 1940s. Wild stuff.

@ajroach42 @derek_g toots about film and has been talking about starting a movie discussion instance.

@erinbee @ajroach42 laserdisc.party coming to the fediverse just as soon as I can figure out where to find 15$ a month to blow on instance fees

@derek_g @erinbee Neat! Keep me posted.

(Also, that's an excellent name.)

@ajroach42 Us and @JubalBarca both sometimes toot text adventure related stuff :)

@ajroach42 the bsd.network instance has a lot of *BSD users and developers on it. Might match your interests.
