Telenet & PC pursuit (pre-Internet X.75 network)
Telenet was a nationwide service where one could get a leased line on one end and then benefit from modem banks all over the country, or connect directly to other Telenet customers. During the heyday of BBSes they offered a service called PC Pursuit where you could dial a local modem on one end, connect to a modem in another part of the country, and dial out again. Node identifiers started with an area code that was the same as the PSTN area code.

@freakazoid I didn't either, but I did happen across some telenet credentials at one point that provided a few months of eager exploration with a hint of danger that was a pretty heady mix for a young teen. mystical portals hidden behind so many numbers, some of them without anyone at the gate.
