@cinebox The only way we're getting a high speed rail network is with a project of the scale of the Interstate Highway System. And we only got that because it was a dual use system; they wanted to be able to move tanks around and provide emergency runways for jets. Unlike freight rail, it's very hard to make high speed rail dual use; it's not like ferrying troops around inside the US is likely to be critical to a war effort.

@cinebox Ah, yes, the slowest and most expensive high speed rail system in the world. Meanwhile, the rest of California's infrastructure is crumbling.
