Profanity, Freenode.

@wire Short answer: yes. Long answer:

openssl s_client -connect chat.freenode.net:6697 </dev/null 2>/dev/null | openssl x509 -noout -text | grep DNS: | sed 's/DNS:/\n/g' | grep libera

Profanity, Freenode.

@wire To expand, whoever controls the TLS certificate for chat.freenode.net added an alternate name for irc.libera.net, so that TLS connections to irc.libera.net would forward to chat.freenode.net without complaining.

Profanity, Freenode.

@wire @bremner They could not have done this without cooperation from a CA.

Profanity, Freenode.

@wire @bremner Oh, libera.net, not libera.chat, so they鈥檙e typosquatting.

Fuckers.

Profanity, Freenode.

@wire @bremner My guess is that they鈥檙e doing this as a deliberate troll, because they know people like us will flip out about it and make ourselves look fanatical to the more moderate tech folks who are on the fence about whether they should care. Because it鈥檚 not like making some people accidentally end up on Freenode is going to have much impact.
