Fediverse tip, reporting
Don't forward reports to the user's instance admin unless you have reason to believe the instance admin is trustworthy. I have seen numerous instances where admins have shared reports with the target user and where the report has been used to harrass the person presumed to have made the report.
If you aren't sure, don't forward. Your instance admin can always choose to forward the report.
fediverse history re: Fediverse tip, reporting
@harrym @freakazoid the closure of snouts.online began with a report being forwarded to monads.online and ended with slurs being thrown at snouts people on Twitter
harassers will absolutely use a report they don't respect as a reason to start a fight

fediverse history re: Fediverse tip, reporting
@packbat @freakazoid so they didn’t know who it was so they just attacked everyone? Gross.
Whatever the case, any reports on this instance should be forwarded to the mods as it’s important we keep our own house clean. We don’t attack reporters.
fediverse history re: Fediverse tip, reporting
@freakazoid @packbat sure, it’s very contextual. I only meant (as you said) it only shows the instance name to moderators
Fediverse tip, reporting
@harrym @freakazoid are you sure? I reported a user for an interaction where I wasn't involved and they knew it was me anyway
re: Fediverse tip, reporting
@freakazoid Oohhh, I never thought of that being an issue. But of course it would be an issue ;-;
Fediverse tip, reporting
@freakazoid the fact that this option is given to users but not admins is quite frankly the worst design decision on the platform
Fediverse tip, reporting
@erincandescent I'm pretty sure it is given to admins?
Fediverse tip, reporting
@freakazoid admins can't forward a report
Fediverse tip, reporting
@freakazoid I have sent reports in which the admin was the target user. The answer was "how you dare report me, mother***?"

re: Fediverse tip, reporting
@SandyJohnson @aurochs I once reported @doot to herself because I couldn't believe she was real. Talk about embarrassing.
re: Fediverse tip, reporting
@freakazoid @SandyJohnson @aurochs *points to pronouns in name*
You're not the first to have reported me for something like that , in fairness! About a week later someone reported me for being a bot and I ended up tagged in a private thread for 2 days with someone arguing I wasn't real
re: Fediverse tip, reporting
@doot @SandyJohnson @aurochs Sorry about the wrong pronouns!
Yeah I thought you were a bot, too, but others set me straight pretty quickly.
re: Fediverse tip, reporting
@doot @freakazoid @SandyJohnson You are Hans from Stuttgart, you are fooling no one.
re: Fediverse tip, reporting
@aurochs @freakazoid @SandyJohnson Goddammit, does everyone know about this?!
re: Fediverse tip, reporting
re: Fediverse tip, reporting
@SandyJohnson @freakazoid XD XD XD More a-hole than eye (or God)
Fediverse tip, reporting
@freakazoid I learnt that the hard way during my first week here
re: Fediverse tip, reporting
@freakazoid As an extension of that:
I've noticed it's very easy to report an instance admin... to themself.
Which is a great way to get dragged through the mud by someone who either doesn't share your COC views at all, or better still, runs a single-user instance specifically to evade stuff like that.

Fediverse tip, reporting
@freakazoid forwarding is annon, you should absolutely forward unless you’re a single user instance and worried about blow back.
